COURSE DESCRIPTION
This
two-semester blended and online course introduces students to multiple career opportunities
in various industries after completing personality and skill assessments. Students
will also be prepared for business and finance decisions and transactions that will
guide them to financial independence; avoiding pitfalls society has become accustom
to.
First semester
consists of instruction and activities teaching those skills necessary to be
successful in career identification and development, financial planning, and
personal goal setting and achievement. Students
will identify a project, create a work portfolio, engage in job shadowing and
community service, as well as public speaking.
Second semester students will develop a business idea and
business plan in an entrepreneurship unit, write an MLA format paper reflecting
on their project experience, creating a tri-fold presentation board, PowerPoint
presentation, and several public speaking assignments. At the end of the school
year, students will give an oral presentation of their project experience to a
panel of judges.

ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments will be completed online and/or in class requiring
5-7 hours of course work weekly which in some cases will require students to schedule
more than one hour per day to complete assignments. Student will be responsible
for completing course work by due date.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS/ABSENCES (Blended)
Late assignments
will result in 5% reduction per day. It is the student’s responsibility
to communicate with the instructor to find out what assignments were missed
and, if needed, arrange lab time with the instructor to make up missed
assignments.
● Missed due date as a result of an excused absence- If a student is absent the day an
assignment is due, that assignment must be turned in the day he/she returns to school. If
absence is planned, student must submit the assignment on the day before it is
due.
● Missed assignments as a result of an excused absence- If a student is absent two or more days, he/she has an
equal number of days to make up the assignments missed during that absence. Students should talk to the teacher to
receive assignments ahead of time for all planned absences due to sporting events.
● Unexcused absences-
Missed assignments and due dates due to unexcused absences will be
considered late. It is recommended
that students make up work ahead of any planned absence. Students can refer to the Course Pacing Guide
on Haiku Learning to identify daily assignments and lessons.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS (Online)
● The
participants that usually have the most success in this virtual environment set
aside a specific time for their work each week.
● If at
any time you are feeling unsure of what is expected for an assignment, refer to
the rubric to get the best sense of what to include in the assignment. Also
feel free to use the discussion boards to ask the class your questions.
● All
assignments for this course will be submitted electronically through Haiku
unless otherwise described. Assignments must be submitted by the given deadline
or special permission must be requested from instructor before the due date.
● If you
find that you have any trouble keeping up with assignments or other aspects of
the course, make sure you let your instructor know as early as possible. Make
sure that you are proactive in informing your instructor when difficulties
arise during the semester so that we can help you find a solution. Under
emergency/special circumstances, participants may petition for an incomplete
status in the course, and resume at a later date
ASSESSMENTS
Include but are not limited to written quizzes and tests as
well as demonstration of skills through projects using online web.2 tools and 11in-class
resources.
Discussions
and Reflections
Throughout this course you will be writing reflections that
address topics within the modules. All of these reflections will be transferred
to your B&F Portfolio at the end of the course. If you already have a
professional blog, you will be able to use that to post your reflections during
the course. You have two options for how to complete your reflections:
1.
Create a blog using Blogger or a similar too, or use your
existing professional blogl. Write a post in your blog for each Reflection
assignment. At the end of the course, you will embed your blog into your
Leading Edge portfolio.
2.
Write your reflections and post them using the Dropbox feature
in Haiku. Click the "turn it in" button at the bottom of the
assignment block to submit your Reflection. At the end of the course, you will
copy and paste your Reflections into your B&F portfolio.
All discussion/ reflection assignments should show a thoughtful
consideration of the topic. They are expected to be written in Standard
English, and are typically 300-500 words in length. Reflections may include
hyperlinks to outside resources, embedded Web 2.0 tools from this course,
and/or properly cited images.
Portfolio
1.
Portfolio assignments will be assessed using the appropriate 3
point rubric. To pass, a score of 3 needs to be achieved for each portfolio
assignment.
2.
After all portfolio assignments are assessed, a portfolio rubric
will be used to assess the ePortfolio as a whole. Again, a score of 3 is
required in each rubric category.
3.
Students will be given feedback on their ePortfolio. If students
don't achieve a score of 3 on their ePortfolios, they will be given one chance
to revise and resubmit their ePortfolios for grading.
EXTRA
CREDIT
A limited amount of extra credit may be offered.
COMMUNICATION
Email
Email is generally the best way to reach your instructor. Email will
be checked regularly throughout the day and will respond within 24 hours.
Please write "BandF" in the subject of your email to help the prioritization
of responses for this class.
Discussion Boards
We will use discussion boards with every Module in this course.
Timely participation in discussion forums is critical for success in this
course. To help ensure that everyone is able to fully participate, there are
two due dates with each discussion assignment - the date by which initial posts
are due, and a date by which responses to classmates' posts are due.
Course
Support
If you have a question about any course expectations, it is
likely that many other students will have the same question - please post your
question in either the Q & A Forum (for course questions) or in the
discussion board for the particular assignment. If you need further help to
successfully complete assignments or to meet a specific learning objective in
our class, please reach out to your facilitator(s) as soon as possible and let
them know.
